EXCLUSIVE SOCIAL CLUB VIDEO ↓Four mash bills. Five different finishing casks. More than 50 individual finishing barrels. Shortbarrel certainly isn't taking the simple approach with Cigar Batch #4.
The idea is to create a whiskey that starts with sweeter, fruit-forward flavors before transitioning into darker notes of oak, leather, and spice. And despite the name, it's designed to be enjoyed with or without a cigar.
At around $90, it's competing in a category where we've already found some impressive bottles, including Barrell Cigar Blend, one of our favorites this year.
So, can Shortbarrel bring all these different components together into something worth buying, or is there such a thing as too much complexity?
The Whiskey Behind the Bottle
Shortbarrel started as a group of Atlanta whiskey enthusiasts before becoming a whiskey brand in 2020. Its first bottles reached Georgia shelves in early 2021, and the company has since built much of its reputation around sourcing, blending, and finishing whiskey. Shortbarrel acquired Atlanta's Old Fourth Distillery in 2023.
Cigar Batch is one of its more ambitious releases.
Batch #4 combines four different bourbon mash bills distilled in Kentucky and Indiana, with components finished in Armagnac, Cognac, rum, Tawny Port, and Sherry casks. More than 50 finishing casks went into this release, and it's the first Cigar Batch to incorporate Sherry.
That's a lot of moving parts for one whiskey, and a pretty ambitious blending challenge.
