The name makes you expect something smoky, over-oaked, and built purely for cigar lounges and leather chairs. But the best cigar blend bourbons aren’t really about smoke. They’re about richness, texture, depth, and layered sweetness balanced by earthiness and spice. And honestly, Barrell may be doing that balance better than almost anyone right now.
This Barrell Craft Spirits batch blends whiskeys from Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee, ranging from roughly 7 to 18 years old, then finishes them in Madeira, Armagnac, rum, and Hungarian oak casks. On paper, it sounds like way too much. Too many finishes. Too many variables. Too many chances for the blend to fall apart. Instead, it lands as something surprisingly cohesive. Rich chocolate, baking spice, dark fruit, and leather wrapped into a pour that feels decadent without becoming heavy or overdone.
A Blend That Shouldn’t Work, But Does
Barrell has always embraced the “mad scientist” approach to blending, and Cigar Blend might be the clearest example of that philosophy actually paying off.
There’s a lot happening here, but it never feels chaotic. The finishes don’t stack on top of each other, fighting for attention. They weave together into something that feels intentional and remarkably drinkable for 111.2 proof.
