We cracked this bottle open on a guys’ lake weekend and had to hide it so there would still be enough left to review. That was a pretty good sign.
By the end of the weekend, it had become one of those bottles everyone kept reaching for. We are now on bottle number two, which probably tells you where this review is headed.
What makes Old Overholt interesting here is how different this release feels from the bottle most people know. This is still one of the oldest names in American rye whiskey, but the Cask Strength series lets the brand show a deeper, richer side.
The Whiskey Behind the Bottle
Old Overholt dates back to 1810 and has one of the longest histories in American rye whiskey. Today, the brand is part of the James B. Beam Distilling Co., and the Cask Strength release sits at the other end of the lineup from the familiar everyday bottle.
The series focuses on older rye pulled from selected warehouse locations and bottled unfiltered at cask strength. That alone makes it worth paying attention to, because we don't run into older rye at full proof every day.
What we like about this release is that it still feels connected to Old Overholt, just with more age, more intensity, and a lot more room for the whiskey to show what it can do. And based on how quickly our first bottle disappeared, we were pretty excited to get back into it.
Tasting Notes
Aroma
The nose leans sweeter than we expected from a rye. Dark fruit and cherry come through first, followed by caramel, baking spice, and plenty of mature oak. Some rye spice shows underneath it all, but the sweeter notes stay out front.
Taste
Rich dark cherry carries right into the palate, along with caramel, toffee, baking spice, and a deep oak note that stays with you from beginning to end.
This drinks much closer to the bourbon side of the rye spectrum. The sweeter, darker flavors stay out front, with pepper and rye spice showing up more in the background.
It is not the most complex whiskey we have had. The profile does not change dramatically from sip to sip. But what is there is rich, mature, and really enjoyable.
Finish
The oak becomes even more noticeable on the finish, along with dark fruit, pepper, char, and lingering spice.
It is warm, long, and a little dry toward the end, with that rich oak character hanging around well after the sip.
Artfully Bourbon Rating
9 / 10 - EXCELLENT
We both landed at a 9 on this one. Old Overholt Cask Strength 11 Year is not a whiskey that wins you over with a dozen different flavors. It is actually pretty focused.
Dark fruit. Cherry. Caramel. Spice. A lot of mature oak. And it does all of those things really well. The age is obvious without the oak becoming too much, and the sweeter profile makes this an easy rye for bourbon drinkers to get into. Maybe the best compliment we can give it is that we are already on our second bottle.
Buy or Skip:
Buy
This is an easy one for us. We are already on bottle number two. That says a lot. Older rye at cask strength isn't something we see often, and Old Overholt gives you plenty of depth, proof, and character without feeling like it is trying too hard.
At around $110, this is not an impulse buy, but it feels fair for what is in the bottle.
If you like rye with age, richness, and a little more weight, this is absolutely worth tracking down. We already did, twice.
