Heaven Hill has one of the strongest bourbon lineups, so when they announced a nine-year-old release that combines their traditional rye and wheated bourbon mash bills, we paid attention.

It's a great concept. Take two proven recipes, bring them together, and see if the result is better than either one on its own.

The surprising part? After tasting it, we wondered if Heaven Hill had played things a little too safe.

The Whiskey Behind the Bottle

Heaven Hill Double Mash is a first for the distillery, combining two different bourbon mash bills into a single Bottled-in-Bond release. That's an interesting move from the country's largest producer of Bottled-in-Bond whiskey, especially given the strict production requirements dating back to 1897.

The blend brings together two-thirds of Heaven Hill's traditional rye-recipe bourbon with one-third of its wheated bourbon. Both components are aged nine years, produced within the same distillation season, and bottled together at 100 proof.

Released in August 2026 in limited quantities at $50, Double Mash brings two familiar Heaven Hill recipes together in a new way. It's an opportunity for a distillery with an impressive whiskey portfolio to show what a little experimentation can produce.

Tasting Notes

Aroma

Sweet grain, honey, and cornbread lead the way, with a little plum and cinnamon emerging as the whiskey opens up. It's soft and pleasant, without much rye spice or oak influence.

Taste

Honey, caramel, and graham cracker dominate, followed by brown sugar, light citrus, and a little baking spice. There's some toasted sugar and subtle nuttiness as it develops.

It's an easy-drinking bourbon with a distinctly wheated personality. The flavors are enjoyable, but we struggled to find the depth we'd expect from nine years of aging.

Finish

Medium in length, with lingering sweetness, mild spice, and a touch of oak. It fades gently without much development.

Artfully Bourbon Rating

5.5 / 10 - Above Average

Double Mash isn't bad bourbon. It's just not particularly memorable.

Arthur appreciated its approachable character but found it too sweet and lacking the earthier, spicier notes he prefers. Scott thought the whiskey drank younger than its nine-year age statement and wished Heaven Hill had been more adventurous with the blend.

We both enjoyed drinking it, but the experience never quite matched the promise of the concept.

Buy or Skip:

At $50, a nine-year-old Bottled-in-Bond bourbon sounds like a pretty good deal. And if you enjoy soft, sweet wheated bourbons, Double Mash might be worth trying.

But we'd rather put that money toward something with more character.

Heaven Hill has the whiskey and the experience to make an experiment like this genuinely exciting. Double Mash makes us curious about what else they could create, even if this particular bottle doesn't give us much reason to buy another.
