Limited, distillery-only whiskey creates a problem for a review: we can tell you how good it is, but most people will never get the chance to buy it. That is especially frustrating here because Green River Distillery Select Toasted Double Oak may be the best whiskey Green River has released.
The second barrel adds maturity, texture, and depth without overpowering the bourbon underneath. It feels less like a finishing experiment and more like a glimpse at what Green River can become as older whiskey continues to enter the lineup.
Unfortunately, availability is limited to Green River’s Owensboro distillery and Louisville tasting room. Most drinkers will never see a bottle, but anyone who does should pay attention.
The Whiskey Behind the Bottle
Green River Distilling Co. has built a strong reputation for approachable, value-driven whiskey. The new Distillery Select series gives the brand room to explore smaller batches, higher ages, finishes, and more experimental releases.
Toasted Double Oak is the first bottle in that series and the oldest bourbon Green River has ever released.
The whiskey uses Green River’s traditional mash bill of 70% corn, 21% rye, and 9% malted barley. Thirteen barrels aged for eight years before spending another six months in new American oak barrels with a medium toast and light char. It is bottled at 115.1 proof in a 375 mL bottle with a suggested retail price of $50.
The packaging also separates it from Green River’s core lineup. The rounded bottle and refined label feel elevated without becoming overly elaborate.
It looks special, but the whiskey inside is the real reason to pay attention.
