Green River has quietly become one of the better value names in Kentucky bourbon. Their lineup tends to focus on approachable proof points, traditional flavor profiles, and solid pricing rather than hype or heavy marketing. That consistency is exactly why Green River Honey Finished Bourbon Whiskey caught our attention.

Honey bourbon can be a real hit or miss. Some lean so heavily into sweetness that they barely resemble whiskey anymore. Others feel artificial or overly syrupy. Going in, we genuinely were not sure where this bottle would land.

What surprised us most is that this still feels connected to bourbon. Underneath the honey sweetness, there is still enough caramel, oak, vanilla, and rye spice to remind you that this started as a real Kentucky bourbon. More importantly, it feels intentionally built for warm-weather drinking rather than serious neat-pour analysis.

The Bourbon Equivalent of Summer Vacation

Finished whiskey can sometimes feel like it is trying too hard. More sweetness. More finishing. More flavor is layered on top of the bourbon beneath until the bourbon disappears completely. Green River mostly avoids that problem by keeping things simple.

At 92 proof and around $25, this bottle is clearly designed to be easygoing and approachable. The honey sweetness leads the profile, but it feels softer and more natural than many flavored whiskey releases, thanks to real honey rather than artificial syrupy flavoring.

Neat, it drinks sweet, creamy, and mellow with notes of honey, caramel, graham cracker, vanilla, and light cinnamon spice. The profile does become somewhat repetitive over time, but that almost feels beside the point here. Because the moment this whiskey hits a cocktail, everything clicks.

The Peach Honey Gold Rush Mule completely transformed the bottle. Ginger beer and lemon balanced the sweetness, while peach and mint pushed the entire experience fully into poolside territory. Suddenly, this stopped feeling like a novelty, honey bourbon, and started feeling like an actual summer whiskey. And that is probably the smartest thing this bottle does.

Tasting Notes

Aroma

Immediate honey sweetness right out of the glass. Vanilla, caramel, and soft cinnamon sit beneath, alongside light floral notes and a subtle bready pie-crust character. The longer it opens, the more dessert-like it becomes, leaning into candied pecans, brown sugar glaze, and fair-food sweetness. Oak is present, but light.

Taste

Sweet and creamy from the start. Honey and caramel arrive first, then transition into graham cracker, pie crust, cinnamon spice, and soft, toasted bourbon notes underneath. The mouthfeel stays smooth and approachable throughout with very little heat. As the glass develops, the honey increasingly dominates the profile, though flashes of rye spice help remind you there is still bourbon underneath the sweetness.

Finish

Medium-short and heavily honey-driven. Sweetness lingers longest, followed by soft cinnamon, light toasted oak, and a touch of bourbon spice on the back end. Smooth, easy, and approachable, though not especially evolving or complex.

Cocktail Recommendation

Peach Honey Gold Rush Mule

This is where the bottle shines.

  • 2 oz Green River Honey Finished Bourbon

  • 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice

  • 2 oz ginger beer

  • Fresh mint

  • Peach slice garnish

Muddle mint lightly, fill with ice, add ingredients, stir gently, and garnish with peach and mint. The lemon and ginger beer balance the honey sweetness beautifully, while the peach and mint push the entire drink fully into summer mode.

Simple. Refreshing. Extremely easy to drink.

Artfully Bourbon Rating

8 / 10 - Very Good

Green River Honey Finished Bourbon works because it understands exactly what it wants to be. This is not trying to compete with barrel proof bourbon or ultra-complex neat pours. It is a summer whiskey. A backyard whiskey. A cocktail whiskey. And when viewed through that lens, it succeeds surprisingly well.

Neat, it is enjoyable but somewhat one-dimensional after extended sipping. The honey profile dominates most of the experience, occasionally muting some of the bourbon complexity underneath. But in cocktails? This thing absolutely comes alive.

At around $25, it is approachable, accessible, and genuinely useful for warm-weather whiskey drinks without tasting overly artificial or gimmicky. For bourbon drinkers willing to stop taking honey whiskey quite so seriously, this ends up being far more enjoyable than expected.

Real bourbon. Real honey. Real summer energy.
