A whiskey that used to require a trip through duty-free turned up on the shelf at our local store for $75. Jack Daniel’s American Single Malt was easy enough to find. Whether it would earn a place on our shelves was another question.
Wine-finished whiskey isn’t usually a favorite of ours, and Scott isn’t much of a single malt fan either. This bottle had some work to do. It gave us an enjoyable change of pace, though we didn’t land at quite the same score.
The Whiskey Behind the Bottle
Jack Daniel’s built its reputation on Tennessee whiskey, but its single malt program gave the Lynchburg distillery a different grain to work with: 100% malted barley. The first release arrived in 2022 as a Twice Barreled Special Release, bottled at cask proof. That was a separate expression from the 90-proof bottle we’re reviewing here.
What’s interesting is how much of the familiar Jack Daniel’s process remains. The whiskey still passes through sugar maple charcoal before aging in new charred American oak barrels. The Oloroso sherry casks come afterward, adding another influence to a whiskey that already has its own barrel character.
This expression carries no age statement. The production process gives us useful context, but the bottle leaves its exact maturation and finishing times unspecified.
Tasting Notes
Aroma
Fruit and malted cocoa lead the nose, with gentle oak and vanilla underneath. The overall impression leans sweet, though our strongest impression came when we tasted it.
Taste
We both landed on cookie, with Arthur narrowing it down to a white chocolate cranberry cookie. That sweetness-and-fruit combo gives this pour its personality.
Finish
The sweetness gives way to raisin, coffee, and oak, with a slightly dry edge toward the end. The finish lands around medium, allowing some of that sherry character to linger.
Artfully Bourbon Rating
6.5 / 10 - Good
Arthur called it “crushable.” The white chocolate cranberry cookie character gave him something distinctive to enjoy without needing a big, proof-heavy punch.
Scott liked the cookie character too, but it didn’t do as much to overcome his usual reservations about single malt and wine-finished whiskey. We agreed on the flavor. How much we wanted it in our glass was where we differed.
Buy or Skip:
Buy
At $75 for a liter, we’d buy this again when the annual release comes around. If that cookie description sounds appealing, there’s a good reason to try it. If you rarely enjoy sherry finishes or want something bolder, start with a sample pour.
We’d keep one on the shelf. We’d leave the backup at the store.
