When Elijah Craig released its first Barrel Proof Rye in 2025, it caught a lot of people off guard. Not just because it existed, but because it delivered. Aged, bold, and surprisingly balanced, it quickly became one of the more talked-about rye releases of the year. That kind of debut comes with pressure.

Now comes A126, the follow-up batch. Same concept, same expectations, but a different question: was last year the start of something consistent, or just a standout moment?

At 120.4 proof and just shy of 12 years old, this release sits firmly in the upper tier of aged rye whiskey. The mash bill remains a barely legal rye at 51%, supported by a heavy corn presence that leans the profile toward bourbon rather than traditional high-rye expressions.

A Barrel Proof Rye That Leans Bourbon

Elijah Craig’s approach to rye is distinct.

At 51% rye, this isn’t aiming for aggressive spice, dill, or pine-heavy profiles. Instead, it lives in that middle ground, where rye character shows up, but sweetness and oak still lead the experience.

That balance worked well in the first release. This batch continues in that direction, but with a slightly more noticeable rye presence.

The herbal and earthy notes feel more pronounced here, giving it a bit more identity as a rye while still keeping it approachable for bourbon drinkers.

Tasting Notes

Aroma

The nose opens with cinnamon and light spice, followed by a mix of herbal and earthy notes. Mint, fresh-cut grass, and a soft graininess come through early. With time, it rounds out. Oak becomes more present, and a subtle sweetness develops, something closer to cherry or a cola-like note layered over the spice.

Taste

The palate is rich and immediately expressive. Cracked pepper and cinnamon lead, followed by maple sweetness and a layer of oak that gives it structure. There’s a noticeable creaminess here, with the sweetness balancing the spice so it never feels too sharp or aggressive.

Finish

The finish leans back into the rye profile. Herbal notes, light grassiness, and lingering spice carry through, but the sweetness remains present enough to keep it rounded. It’s long, warm, and balanced, never tipping too far in any one direction.

Artfully Bourbon Rating

9 / 10 - Excellent

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye A126 builds on the foundation of its first release without trying to replicate it exactly. It shows a bit more rye character and edge, but keeps the richness and balance that made the original stand out.

At this point, the takeaway is clear: this isn’t a one-off.

Both batches deliver, and while they differ slightly in profile, neither feels like a step back. Instead, this feels like a series that’s finding its rhythm, one that could become a consistent must-buy if that level of quality holds.

For us, this is a confident follow-up that proves Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye is worth paying attention to, now and in the future.
