There was a time when every new Blood Oath release felt like an automatic buy. The annual Lux Row series built a reputation around mystery, limited availability, unique finishes, and the promise that master distiller John Rempe had discovered something special.

Lately, though, some of that excitement has faded. The Blood Oath name still carries weight, but recent releases have left us wondering whether the series is still pushing boundaries or simply coasting on its reputation. Enter Blood Oath Pact 12.

This year’s release combines 9-year and 12-year rye bourbons with a 7-year rye bourbon finished in both Montepulciano and Sangiovese wine casks from Italy. The result is a double wine-finished bourbon bottled at the series’ signature 98.6 proof and packaged in the familiar embossed bottle and wooden display box. On paper, it sounded risky. In the glass, it turned out to be one of the biggest surprises of the year.

A Finished Bourbon That Still Tastes Like Bourbon

Wine-finished bourbon can be a dangerous game. Done poorly, it tastes like someone dumped red wine directly into the barrel and hoped for the best. The bourbon gets buried under fruit, tannins, and dryness until it barely resembles whiskey anymore.

Pact 12 avoids that trap almost entirely. The Italian wine influence is unmistakable, but it never dominates the experience. Instead, it works more like seasoning than the main ingredient. The wine casks add layers of dark fruit, cocoa, leather, and subtle dryness while allowing the underlying bourbon to remain the star of the show.

What impressed us most was the balance. This isn’t a wine-forward experiment trying to reinvent bourbon. It’s still recognizably bourbon from start to finish, just viewed through a slightly different lens. The result is rich, flavorful, and surprisingly approachable.

Tasting Notes

Aroma

The nose opens with an immediate burst of dark cherry. Rich, dark cherry. As the whiskey settles, additional layers begin to emerge. Caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, leather, and oak all begin to build up beneath the fruit. Given enough time in the glass, the profile becomes increasingly dessert-like, revealing notes of cocoa powder, baking spices, cinnamon, and subtle pepper.

The wine casks clearly contribute to the fruit-forward presentation, but nothing feels artificial or overly sweet. Instead, the aroma comes across as mature, layered, and inviting.

Taste

The palate is where Pact 12 really shines. The first thing that stands out is the texture. This whiskey feels rich and syrupy without becoming heavy or overly sweet.

Dark cherry remains the dominant note, but it quickly evolves into flavors reminiscent of Luxardo cherry syrup, dark chocolate, toasted graham cracker, caramel, and baking spice. A pleasant peppery spice develops across the tongue while subtle oak provides structure underneath.

What surprised us most was how restrained the wine influence feels. Rather than overwhelming the bourbon, the finishing casks contribute a gentle dryness that keeps the sweeter flavors in check. The result feels unique without feeling gimmicky.

Finish

Medium in length with lingering spice, cocoa, cherry, and light oak. The finish doesn’t deliver a massive Kentucky hug at 98.6 proof, but it leaves behind a pleasant warmth and a lingering dryness that feels perfectly suited for pairing with food. The spice remains active on the tongue long after the sip is gone, creating an experience that feels bigger than the proof would suggest.

Artfully Bourbon Rating

8.5 / 10 - Very Good

Blood Oath Pact 12 succeeds because it manages to do something many finished bourbons struggle to accomplish. It feels adventurous without losing its identity.

The double Italian wine cask finish adds complexity, texture, and character without turning the whiskey into a wine bomb. The cherry, cocoa, spice, and leather notes work together beautifully, creating a pour that feels distinctive yet undeniably bourbon.

At $130 MSRP, this certainly isn’t an everyday bottle. But unlike many premium limited releases, Pact 12 feels like it earns its price tag. The presentation is excellent, the flavor profile is memorable, and the whiskey delivers something genuinely different from most bottles on the shelf.

If you’ve drifted away from the Blood Oath series over the last few years, Pact 12 might be the release that pulls you back in. Sometimes the hype gets ahead of the whiskey. This time, the whiskey kept up.
