Penelope releases a lot of whiskey. Some bottles get our attention. Others are firmly in the “try before you buy” category. Architects of Golf immediately stood out because the concept is unlike anything else in the Penelope lineup, but a clever bottle only gets you so far. Fortunately, Hole 1 is also pretty good bourbon.

This six-year whiskey is finished with American oak staves and bottled at an approachable 94 proof. The extra oak adds vanilla, chocolate, toast, and enough depth to separate it from a standard MGP bourbon without overwhelming what is underneath. It is not the biggest or most complex whiskey we have reviewed, but that does not feel like the goal. Hole 1 is balanced, easy to drink, and almost purpose-built for a warm afternoon outside. Just maybe don't drink an ounce per hole.

The Whiskey Behind the Bottle

Penelope Bourbon was founded by Michael Paladini and Danny Polise after conversations during a round of golf helped inspire what would eventually become the brand. Architects of Golf brings that story back to where it started.

The collection is designed around a full 18-hole round, with Holes 1, 2, and 3 launching the series. Each release explores different stave profiles, finishing times, and levels of oak influence.

Hole 1 is a six-year straight bourbon finished with American oak staves and bottled at 94 proof with a suggested retail price of $59.99.

The golf theme carries through the packaging. Hole 1 plays as a 418-yard par four, while the back label includes a scorecard built around vanilla, spice, toast, and fruit on the palate. It is creative without taking itself too seriously, and it makes us curious to see where the next holes go.
