Artfully Bourbon / October 30, 2026

Stranahan’s oldest whiskey spends 14 years aging in new American oak, Cognac, and rare Hungarian Tokaji casks. This one has our attention.

Fourteen years is a long time for American single malt whiskey. But the age statement isn't the only thing that makes Stranahan’s latest release interesting.

The Denver distillery has introduced Mountain Angel 14-Year-Old, its oldest whiskey to date, with an unusual combination of new American oak, Cognac, and Hungarian Tokaji wine casks.

It's an ambitious release from one of the pioneers of American single malt, and another example of how much room this growing whiskey category has to explore.

The whiskey joins the existing Mountain Angel 10- and 12-Year-Old expressions. The 10-year focuses on extended maturation in new charred oak, while the 12-year incorporates a Port cask finish. Mountain Angel 14 takes that experimentation another step with both Cognac and Tokaji casks.

Why it matters

Stranahan’s has been producing American single malt for more than two decades, giving the distillery something increasingly valuable as the category grows: genuinely old stocks of American malt whiskey.

Mountain Angel 14 puts that maturity to work with a finishing program we don't see very often.

Tokaji, a Hungarian wine known for its concentrated fruit and sweetness balanced by acidity, is particularly intriguing. According to Stranahan’s, the finished whiskey delivers notes of apricot, orange marmalade, baked apple, stone fruit, vanilla, caramel, tobacco, chocolate, and oak spice.

Those are the distillery's tasting notes. We'll save ours until there's whiskey in the glass.

The AB take

This is exactly the kind of release that gets us excited about American single malt.

The combination of age and unconventional cask finishing raises an interesting question: will all those layers work together, or will they compete for attention?

At $129.99, the price also feels worth exploring for a 14-year-old American whiskey.

We're looking forward to putting Mountain Angel 14 to the test and seeing what all that time and experimentation actually brings to the glass.
