But here we are. Orphan Barrel has announced Latverian Cask, a limited-edition American light whiskey inspired by Doctor Doom and Marvel Studios' upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
At $200, this might be an easy decision for Marvel collectors. For whiskey drinkers, though, there's a little more to consider.

Orphan Barrel has built its reputation around finding and releasing older whiskey stocks, typically bourbon. Latverian Cask takes a different direction as the brand's first American light whiskey.
Distilled in Indiana and aged for at least 20 years, the whiskey matured primarily in Kentucky, with some barrels remaining in Indiana. Most of that aging took place in previously used bourbon, rye, and other American whiskey barrels.
Unlike bourbon, American light whiskey is distilled at a higher proof and can mature in used barrels. That generally means less direct barrel influence, which makes the 20-year age statement particularly interesting.
The whiskey is bottled at 92 proof. According to Orphan Barrel, the flavor profile includes caramel, vanilla, honey, butterscotch, orange peel, and oak, with dried fruit on the finish.
We'll find out how those flavors translate when we get it in the glass.
A Bottle Built for Doctor Doom
The name Latverian Cask comes from Latveria, the fictional country ruled by Doctor Doom, who will appear in Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday.
Marvel artist Rod Reis created the bottle artwork, featuring a green, stained-glass-inspired design with references to the character and his fictional homeland.
And for collectors, there's another twist. One in every six bottles features a holographic label.
It's an interesting combination of whiskey and comic book collecting, and clearly a release designed to appeal to more than just whiskey enthusiasts.
The AB take
If you're a big Avengers fan, especially a Doctor Doom fan, you'll probably want to buy this. The bottle looks great, the artwork is unique, and the connection to Avengers: Doomsday makes it a pretty interesting collectible.
But if you're buying it primarily for the whiskey, we're not quite there yet.
Twenty years is a lot of age, and we're genuinely curious about what that does for an American light whiskey. But age alone doesn't guarantee a great pour, and at $200, we'd want the whiskey to deliver something special.

We'll wait until we get a sample in the glass before making that call. For collectors, the decision might already be made. For whiskey drinkers, we're holding off on a recommendation until we've tasted it.
