Maker’s Mark has a new bottle for the shopping list. This one comes with a travel itinerary.

On October 6, the Kentucky distillery announced its World Wood Collection, a series exclusive to Global Travel Retail. The inaugural release, Expedition 01, is Maker’s first whisky finished with Japanese Mizunara oak staves, joining French and American white oak in a single expression, according to the company’s announcement.

The production detail matters: the whiskies receive their individual oak finishes before blending. Those three finishes meet in the blend.

What to know

  • Product: Maker’s Mark World Wood Collection, Expedition 01
  • Finishing: Japanese Mizunara, French and American white oak staves; individually finished whiskies blended together
  • Proof: 95 (47.5% ABV)
  • Bottle size: 1 liter
  • Suggested retail price: $85
  • Release: Limited; launching October 6, 2026
  • Availability: Global Travel Retail exclusively; initial Avolta outlets at New York JFK, London Heathrow (LHR), Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), Perth (PER) and Bengaluru (BLR)

The announcement does not specify an age statement, bottle count or finishing duration. The listed airports are launch locations, not confirmation of stock at every shop or access from every terminal.

Why it matters

Oak finishing is familiar territory for Maker’s. Maker’s Mark 46 uses ten seared French oak staves inserted into the barrel after the bourbon’s initial maturation. Expedition 01 expands that approach by introducing Mizunara and blending across three oak treatments.

That makes the blend the interesting part. How the components work together will tell us more than the number of countries represented on the label. The announcement supplies the method, but it does not disclose the proportions.

The AB take

Looks like we’ll be going on a trip soon. This has our attention because there’s a specific experiment we want to taste: what Mizunara brings to Maker’s, and how it plays alongside the other two finishes. We haven’t tasted Expedition 01, so an $85 liter is a reason to investigate, not a value verdict.

If one of those airports is already on your itinerary, this deserves a spot on your radar. As for us, we may have just found another reason to leave room in the luggage.
