Thirty years after a devastating fire destroyed its original distillery, Heaven Hill is releasing a special bourbon containing whiskey that survived the tragedy.

On November 7, 1996, a devastating fire tore through Heaven Hill's original Bardstown distillery, destroying seven rickhouses and nearly 100,000 barrels of aging bourbon. The estimated loss was $30 million, making it one of the most destructive fires in American whiskey history.

Thirty years later, Heaven Hill is commemorating that event with Heaven Hill Phoenix, a one-time release combining 18-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey with a portion of 30-year-old bourbon distilled before the fire.

It's a remarkable connection to the distillery's past, and it makes Phoenix more than just another expensive limited release.

A Piece of Heaven Hill History

Phoenix began with bourbon distilled in March 2008 and matured for 18 years in heavily charred barrels. Heaven Hill then blended in a portion of 30-year-old whiskey from its original distillery, produced before the fire.

Despite the 1996 destruction, no lives were lost, and Heaven Hill retained its employees. The company's proprietary yeast strain also survived, preserving an important part of its whiskey-making tradition. Heaven Hill eventually rebuilt its distilling operations and continued growing into one of America's largest independent, family-owned whiskey producers.

The release honors that recovery with special-edition packaging featuring a phoenix rising from the ashes and the words "Remember. Rebuild. Rise."

As for the whiskey itself, Heaven Hill describes notes of polished oak, cinnamon, caramel, butterscotch and baked apple, followed by a long, warm finish with peppery spice. We haven't tasted Phoenix yet, but we're certainly interested in finding out how that 30-year-old component influences the final blend.

The AB take

At $325, Heaven Hill Phoenix isn't an everyday bourbon purchase. But we're not sure it's supposed to be.

Some bottles are meant to be opened and enjoyed. Others belong in a collection because of the history they represent. Phoenix has a legitimate claim to both.

The 18-year age statement is impressive on its own, but including whiskey from Heaven Hill's original distillery makes this release especially meaningful. This isn't just anniversary packaging. There's actual history inside the bottle.

We would still love to know how much of that 30-year-old whiskey is in the blend. And for anyone planning to open it, the drinking experience absolutely matters. A great story doesn't guarantee great bourbon.

But for collectors, especially those who appreciate Heaven Hill's history, Phoenix offers something you can't simply recreate in another batch.

Would we spend $325 on it? We'd want to taste it first. But we completely understand why someone would buy this bottle without ever intending to open it.
