Basil Hayden is giving its Kentucky bourbon a French twist.

The brand has introduced Basil Hayden Cognac Cask Reserve, a limited-edition expression that takes its signature high-rye bourbon and finishes it in French oak casks previously used to age Cognac.

It's one of the brand's first new expressions in several years and signals a new direction for a whiskey that built its reputation on being easy to drink.

What Makes Cognac Cask Reserve Different?

The biggest difference is in the finishing process. Basil Hayden takes its signature high-rye bourbon and finishes it in specially selected French oak casks that previously held Cognac exclusively for 20 to 25 years.

According to the brand, the finishing process introduces notes of caramel and dried fruit, complemented by subtle spice, vanilla, and oak. The bourbon retains its familiar 80 proof (40% ABV).

The release also marks a new direction for Basil Hayden, exploring globally inspired flavors while staying true to its Kentucky bourbon roots.

Basil Hayden Cognac Cask Reserve was released in September 2026 at select retailers with a suggested retail price of $49.99. Availability will vary by market.

The AB take

Basil Hayden has never been a bourbon we reach for when we're looking for big proof or bold flavors. But that's not really what the brand is trying to deliver.

What makes Cognac Cask Reserve interesting is whether the finishing process adds depth to that lighter profile. The dried fruit and oak notes sound promising, especially coming from casks that held Cognac for more than two decades.

At $50, it's an interesting option for someone curious about finished bourbon. But will the Cognac influence be enough to set it apart from the original?

We'll be putting it through our Sniff, Sip, Score process soon to find out.
