Best Wheated Bourbons To Buy In 2026
CLICK THE VIDEO TO PLAY ↓Wheated bourbon has a reputation for being soft, sweet, and easy drinking. And while that's true for some bottles, it's hardly the whole story.
We've tasted wheated bourbons that are rich and oak-forward, others that bring serious proof and spice, and a few that barely resemble what most people expect from a wheater. This category has far more variety than it gets credit for.
So for our 2026 wheated bourbon shelf, we went back through bottles we've actually reviewed, tasted, and spent time with to find ten worth recommending. Some are familiar favorites you can find at most liquor stores. Others are newer releases or bottles that might require a little hunting.
We're not simply picking the ten highest-scoring wheated bourbons. Every bottle on this shelf has a job to do. We've chosen our favorites for everyday drinking, sipping neat, mixing cocktails, high proof, beginners, value, and a few other categories, including our best overall wheated bourbon.
Price matters, too. A great $50 bottle can be a better recommendation than a $100 bottle that's only slightly better. And just because something is allocated doesn't automatically make it worth chasing.
Whether you're new to wheated bourbon or already have a shelf full of Maker's Mark and Weller, these are the ten bottles we think deserve your attention in 2026.
Our Picks
-
Distillery: Maker's Mark Distillery
Proof: Variable, 107–114
Age: 7–8 Years, varies by batch
MSRP: $50Tasting Notes: Dark Cherry, Salted Caramel, Vanilla, Toasted Oak, Dark Chocolate, Baking Spice
Why It Won: Maker's Mark Cask Strength is one of the easiest recommendations on this entire shelf. It delivers everything we like about the classic Maker's profile, just with more flavor, proof, and depth. The new age statements in 2026 are a welcome addition, and at around $50, this is a bottle we can happily keep coming back to without feeling like we're saving it for a special occasion.
Buy If: You want a flavorful, readily available cask-strength wheated bourbon at a reasonable price.
-
Distillery: Rabbit Hole Distillery
Proof: 93
Age: NAS
MSRP: $80Tasting Notes: Rich Dark Fruit, Sherry Sweetness, Berry, Vanilla, Oak, Dessert-Like Sweetness
Why It Won: This might seem like an unusual beginner recommendation, especially at $80. But Dareringer's Pedro Ximénez sherry cask finish gives it a rich, fruit-forward profile that's easy to enjoy without needing years of bourbon experience. Even Arthur, who isn't generally the biggest fan of sherry-finished whiskey, recommends this one. It's a different introduction to bourbon, but a particularly enjoyable one.
Buy If: You're new to bourbon and enjoy sweeter, fruit-forward flavors, or want to explore finished whiskey.
-
Distillery: Green River Distilling Co.
Proof: 109.3, launch batch
Age: Blend of barrels aged up to 7 years
MSRP: $50Tasting Notes: Caramel, Tangerine, Citrus, Vanilla Crème, Cinnamon, Sweet Wheat
Why It Won: We don't always reach for wheated bourbon when making cocktails. The softer profile can disappear behind the other ingredients. Green River Wheated Full Proof doesn't have that problem. At 109.3 proof, there's enough flavor and intensity to hold its own, while the caramel and citrus notes work especially well in a mixed drink. For $50, it's a versatile bottle that deserves some time outside the Glencairn.
Buy If: You want a wheated bourbon with enough proof and flavor to stand up in cocktails.
-
Distillery: Heaven Hill Distillery
Proof: Variable by batch, generally in the 120s
Age: NAS
MSRP: $65–$70Tasting Notes: Caramel, Brown Sugar, Baking Spice, Oak, Dark Fruit
Why It Won: Not every wheated bourbon is soft and easygoing. Larceny Barrel Proof brings plenty of intensity, with rich sweetness, oak, spice, and enough proof to make its presence known. We like that it offers a bigger drinking experience without abandoning the wheated bourbon character. Batches vary, which is part of the appeal, though it also means your experience won't always match ours.
Buy If: You want a bold, barrel-proof wheated bourbon with plenty of flavor and intensity.
-
Distillery: Bardstown Bourbon Company
Proof: 106
Age: 6 Years
MSRP: $50Tasting Notes: Apricot, Lemon, Crème Brûlée, Pastry, Oak, Light Spice
Why It Won: Bardstown takes a different approach to wheated bourbon with a mash bill containing 39% wheat. That higher percentage brings a distinctive fruit-forward character, with layers of sweetness, pastry, and oak. At six years old and 106 proof, there's plenty happening here for $50. It's a great example of how much variety exists within wheated bourbon, and one of the better values on our shelf.
Buy If: You want to explore a higher-wheat mash bill with a more fruit-forward, layered flavor profile.
-
Distillery: Southern Distilling Company
Proof: Variable by barrel, 109.8 for our selection
Age: NAS
MSRP: $65Tasting Notes: Caramel, Vanilla, Baking Spice, Toasted Grain, Oak
Why It Won: Southern Star genuinely surprised us when we first tried it. From North Carolina, it doesn't have the name recognition of the big Kentucky distilleries, but the whiskey holds its own. It's flavorful, well-balanced, and interesting enough to share with someone who hasn't tried much craft bourbon. We haven't had a bad single barrel yet, and that's a pretty good reason to keep recommending it.
Buy If: You enjoy introducing friends to lesser-known distilleries and want a flavorful cask-strength bourbon with some personality.
-
Distillery: Holladay Distillery
Proof: 114
Age: 6 Years, 8 Months, per our reviewed bottle
MSRP: $85Tasting Notes: Rich Oak, Caramel, Vanilla, Toasted Wood, Baking Spice
Why It Won: We've been following Holladay's whiskey for years, and the Ancient Cave Collection is one of its more interesting experiments. This release takes its Soft Red Wheat bourbon and gives it a second maturation in a freshly charred American oak barrel. The result is a richer, more oak-driven take on a whiskey we already enjoy. It's limited and not particularly easy to find, but that's part of the fun of discovering it.
Buy If: You enjoy double-oaked bourbon and want to explore a more experimental release from Holladay.
-
Distillery: Buffalo Trace Distillery
Proof: 107
Age: NAS
MSRP: Approximately $60–$65Tasting Notes: Caramel, Vanilla, Cherry, Cinnamon, Baking Spice
Why It Won: Weller Antique 107 gives us that classic Buffalo Trace wheated bourbon profile with enough proof to make it particularly enjoyable neat. It's sweet and approachable, but there's also enough spice and structure to keep it interesting. The catch is finding it at a reasonable price. At MSRP, it's an excellent pour. At twice that price, we're having a very different conversation.
Buy If: You enjoy classic wheated bourbon and can find Weller Antique 107 close to retail pricing.
-
Distillery: Old Louisville Whiskey Co.
Proof: 119.2
Age: 7 Years
MSRP: $100Tasting Notes: Cinnamon, Baking Spice, Vanilla, Oak, Citrus, Wheat Sweetness
Why It Won: This is the wheated bourbon for people who don't think they like wheated bourbon. With a mash bill that includes 45% wheat and a nearly 120 proof, Old Louisville delivers a big, spicy drinking experience that feels closer to what we expect from a bold rye. It's uncut, unfiltered, and full of character. If you're expecting something soft and delicate, you'll be surprised. That's exactly why it earned a spot on our shelf.
Buy If: You love high-proof rye whiskey and want a wheated bourbon with similar intensity, spice, and structure.
-
Distillery: Maker's Mark Distillery
Proof: Variable, 107–114
Age: NAS
MSRP: $65Tasting Notes: Dark Red Fruit, Caramel, Baking Spice, Tobacco, Dark Chocolate, Toasted Oak
Why It Won: Maker's Mark 46 Cask Strength brings together just about everything we want in a wheated bourbon. It takes the familiar sweetness of Maker's Mark and adds more oak, spice, and complexity through its French oak stave finishing process. At cask strength, those flavors become even richer without losing their balance. It's not the rarest or most expensive bottle on this shelf, and that's part of the appeal. For us, the combination of flavor, proof, and value makes this the best overall wheated bourbon to buy in 2026.
Buy If: You want a rich, high-proof wheated bourbon with plenty of oak, spice, and depth at a reasonable price.
Our Take
Putting this shelf together reminded us just how much variety there is in wheated bourbon. Some bottles deliver that familiar soft, sweet profile, while others bring serious proof, spice, and oak. There's a lot more to explore than just Maker's Mark and Weller.
What surprised us most is how many excellent options fall in the $50–$70 range. You don't need to chase allocated bottles or spend $100 to find a great wheated bourbon.
Maker's Mark 46 Cask Strength earned our best overall pick because it delivers rich flavor, complexity, and balance at a sensible price. It's a bottle we'd happily buy again, and that's ultimately what matters.
Our advice? Don't chase the hype. Find the profile you enjoy, and don't overlook what's already sitting on the shelf.
How We Build These Lists
Our recommendations come from firsthand experience, not paid placements or sponsored rankings. We consider flavor, value, availability, category fit, and whether a bottle truly gives you something worth paying extra for.
We rebuild our annual Best Of guides as the whiskey landscape changes. New bottles arrive, prices move, and old favorites face new competition. If something better earns the spot, it takes its place on the shelf.
