Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye is one of those bottles that makes you wonder how Jack Daniel’s is still selling it for around $65.
It is single barrel, barrel proof, usually lands around 130 proof, and delivers the kind of depth and intensity we are used to seeing in bottles that cost considerably more.
There is one catch: these are single barrels, so they are not all created equal.
We have tried quite a few of them over the years, and there is definitely some variation. The rare dud might land around a 7 for us. A really great barrel can push all the way into 9 territory and start reminding us of some of the fantastic whiskey that has come off Coy Hill. This bottle is one of those.
The Whiskey Behind the Bottle
Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye uses the distillery’s 70% rye, 18% corn, and 12% malted barley mashbill. Like the rest of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey, it goes through the Lincoln County Process, mellowing through sugar maple charcoal before entering new charred American oak barrels.
There is no age statement, and because this is a single barrel release, proof and profile will vary from bottle to bottle. That variation is also part of the fun.
One thing we have noticed is that some of the more recent bottles seem to drink differently than the earlier releases we tried. They can still push well into the 130-proof range, but the heat feels more integrated, with richer oak and a little more maturity showing through. Could some of these barrels be older than what we were drinking a few years ago? Maybe.
Jack Daniel’s does not provide an age statement, so that is purely speculation on our part. It could just as easily be the barrels we have encountered or our palates getting far too comfortable with 130-proof whiskey. Either way, the more recent barrels we’ve tried have been impressive.
If you enjoy hunting for barrel information, take a look at the neck tag. Barrel Houses 1-08, 1-09, 1-10, 1-11, and 1-13 are located on Coy Hill, the highest point on the Jack Daniel Distillery property. Finding one does not automatically mean you have the next legendary Coy Hill release sitting in your hands, but we have had some fantastic whiskey come from those houses.
Tasting Notes
Aroma
Rich caramel and brown sugar come forward first, followed by fresh mint, dark cocoa, and nutmeg. There is also that unmistakable Jack Daniel’s fruitiness underneath it all, leaning toward ripe banana and banana foster rather than the brighter banana note you might find in Old No. 7.
Taste
Big, rich, and immediately sweet. Caramel and brown sugar build into a banana foster-like dessert note, with cooked banana, vanilla, and dark caramel providing the foundation. Clove, mint, pepper, and baking spices follow quickly, giving the rye plenty of character without overwhelming the whiskey's sweeter side.
There is substantial oak here too, but on this barrel it adds depth rather than drying everything out. And somehow, despite all that proof, the whiskey feels remarkably composed.
Finish
Long, warming, and packed with flavor. Toasted oak, clove, pepper, and baking spices linger alongside caramel and brown sugar. The sweetness hangs around long after the initial heat fades, giving the finish more balance than you might expect from something this powerful.

Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye continues to be one of our favorite bottles to recommend to experienced whiskey drinkers.
Not because every barrel is a 9. They aren't. That is the reality of single-barrel whiskey, and we have encountered bottles across a pretty wide range. But when you find a great one, this whiskey can compete with bottles two or three times its price.
That said, this is absolutely not where we would send someone who is just getting into whiskey. At roughly 130 proof, Barrel Proof Rye can wake you up in a hurry. If the alcohol is getting in the way of the flavor, add a few drops of water with a dropper and try again. It has more than enough intensity to handle it.
For experienced drinkers, though, this is Jack Daniel’s operating near the top of its game.

Yes, there is variation. But even knowing that, we keep buying them. And when one turns out like this? We usually wish we had bought two.
