For over 150 years, Jack Daniel’s has been synonymous with American whiskey. But in recent years, the iconic Tennessee distillery has been doing something that’s shaking up even the most seasoned bourbon drinkers: it’s getting older—and better.
This month, for our inaugural Whiskey of the Month feature, we’re highlighting Jack Daniel’s 14-Year Tennessee Whiskey / Batch 1 —a bottle that embodies everything we love about age, oak, and the quiet power of patience.
A New Era of Tennessee Whiskey
Jack Daniel’s is the best-selling Whiskey in the world. Still, for decades, it was mostly known for its flagship Old No. 7—a charcoal-mellowed Tennessee whiskey often dismissed by bourbon enthusiasts. That narrative has undergone a significant shift in recent years.
Behind the scenes, Master Distiller Chris Fletcher (who took over in 2020) and his team have been crafting more premium, age-stated expressions that elevate the brand’s legacy. The 10-year and 12-year releases were the first to signal a new era. Now, with the 14-Year Batch 1, Jack Daniel’s has fully entered the conversation among top-tier American whiskey producers.
This bottle was distilled and barreled at the historic Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee—a dry county, ironically—and aged using a unique maturation strategy. Initially, barrels were placed on the upper floors of the rickhouses, where extreme heat accelerates aging. After several years, they were moved to lower levels to allow for slower, more even development. This technique avoids over-oaking while coaxing out complexity and richness.
Despite being labeled as Tennessee Whiskey, Jack’s process—80% corn mash bill, new charred oak barrels, and a charcoal mellowing process known as the Lincoln County Process—checks nearly every box of traditional bourbon production. The distinction lies mainly in that additional filtration step, which softens the spirit and adds a signature smoothness.
The 14-Year is the oldest publicly released age-stated Whiskey from Jack Daniel’s in the modern era. It reflects not only a more patient approach but also the brand’s confidence that its Whiskey can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the best in the world.
Tasting Notes
Aroma:
The first whiff is unmistakably Tennessee whiskey but more refined and nuanced. Charcoal and vanilla are still here, but they’re joined by toasted coconut, leather, and dark maple syrup. There’s a dusty antique quality that hints at the age, but it never veers into tired wood.
Taste:
This is where the age shines. It enters soft and slightly oily, with notes of dark cherry, molasses, caramelized banana, and seasoned oak. There’s a savory thread—almost like toasted nuts or baking spice—that keeps it grounded. The proof is perfect: high enough to deliver complexity, low enough to invite repeat sips.
Finish:
Long and warm. The oak is present, but it complements sweet tobacco, baking spice, and a hint of citrus zest nicely. No bitterness. No bite. Just balance.
