To mark the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army’s founding on June 14, 1775, Green River Distilling has released a commemorative bourbon bottled at an “Army Strong” 111.1 proof—a nod to Veterans Day (11/11). Distilled in Owensboro, KY, and crafted from a unique mashbill of 75% corn, 15% winter rye, and 10% 6-row malted barley, this limited edition is more than just another proof point in Green River’s lineup—it’s an official licensed product, with a portion of proceeds supporting U.S. Army Morale, Welfare, and Recreation programs.
Flavor Delivered by Parachute
While Green River is best known for its 70% corn, 21% rye, and 9% malted barley mash bill, this release stands out as different and a commemorative bottle with deep military ties. It was even delivered via parachute by the All Veterans Group to mark the Army’s milestone birthday—a fitting tribute considering CEO Mark Erwin’s background as a retired Army Colonel and Airborne Ranger. At $50, it’s positioned as an accessible keepsake for veterans, active-duty service members, and bourbon collectors alike.
Tasting Notes
Aroma
Cherry cola, light almond nuts with faint vanilla. A touch of earthy chocolate, but overall muted.
Taste
Soft notes of caramel and orange zest with hints of cinnamon and light leather. Some sweetness, but the flavors feel thin and youthful, never fully developing into depth.
Finish
Gentle caramel and toasted coconut with harsh pepper spice. Short to medium length, clean, but still showing its younger age.
Artfully Bourbon Rating
5.5 / 10 - AVERAGE
We respect the story, the cause, and the accessible price, but flavor-wise this one sits in “average” territory. The different mashbill may be what didn’t click for us, as we generally prefer the richer, bolder profile of Green River’s regular bourbon and full-proof offerings. It tastes pretty young and lacks complexity, with simple, muted flavors that never quite open up. Still, it’s a meaningful release and a solid pour for those who want a commemorative keepsake or a gift for someone with Army ties.
